ALTERING THE PRIMITIVES
This section makes use of more POVLAB-primitives and shows the application of advanced features and functions such as merging, scaling, rotating and more.

Bound for the temple

· At this point, the column is fully built, and you can make some test-renderings if you like. But before you do so, minimize the current viewport (if it's maximized) and check out the camera-position and -angle as well as the lights in the scene.

IMPORTANT: Because of the fact, that - by now - we don't have any room-like constructions in the scene, which would reflect the light and therefore brighten up the scene, the column will be renderd pretty dark. To avoid this, you should use at least 2 omnilights.

· We now will build a simple front side for our temple consisting of four columns and some deco. Before we do this, save the current scene and start a new one with the command »File« | »New«. In this blank sheet, we well now merge the previously stored column with the command »File« | »Merge«!

IMPORTANT: If you are merging scenes you should always keep in mind, that the merged scene will be centered to the coordinate-system. You should check before merging, that not other tiles are on this position - otherwise, the selecting and translation of the merged tile could get rather difficult.

· After the merge-command is completed, you should have a column right in the middle of the scene.
Deselect all objects by pressing »ALT-U« or by using the button-controls »selection« | »none«. To get the column onto the proper position, check out the following steps ...
· Step 1 - change to the »front«-viewport and maximize it (if it isn't). Step 2 - click on »selection« | »area« and draw a rectangle around the column (it should then be colored in the selection-color). Step 3 - press the spacebar or click on the »selection«- switch in the lower right corner of the screen, to indicate, that we now will work with a group of selected objects (a blue LED will be displayed, when the selection-mode is activated). Step 4 - choose the command »modify« | »translate« and click on the selected column in the front-viewport (a bounding box with a cross-hair-cursor will be shown then). Step 5 - drag the column to the right until the info bar (lower left corner) indicates the X-coordinate at X=12.00. Step 6 - align the bottom- line of the bounding box to a grid line (the line will be highlightend if you're on it) and release the mouse button.

· There we are! The column is on the right position, and all that's left, is to make three copies of it using the »modify« | »copy-command. IMPORTANT: Check out, that the selection-switch is activated during the copy- and translation-procedures. Follow the next steps to accomplish the copy-procedure ...

· Step 1 - select »modify« | »copy«, click on the column on position X=12.00 and drag the copy onto the position X=4.00 (don't worry if the info-bar shows coordinates like X=4.01 - this is close enough!). Step 2 - make two further copies of the source-column and drag them onto the postions X=-4.00 and X=-12.00. We now have four columns with equal distances from each other, so you should save the scene under the file-name TMPLFRNT.SCN. Alternatively you can download the scene-file TMPLFRNT.ZIP (ca. 5.0 kB).
