Tips on working with heightfields

· Because the HF is such a flexible object, there are various more or less complex ways to use it. During the following sections we will take a closer look at some of the possibilities, which are beyond the creation of »fictional mountains«.

Real landscapes and 3D-outlines

· Ever thought of using real photographs as a HF- image? If not, then check out the following picture ...

· How is such a shape made? This is quite simple: A - get a satellite-photo from CD-ROM or from the Internet. B - convert it into a TGA- or a GIF-file.
C - adjust the colors of the image, so that you get smooth height- transitions. That's all! In POVLAB you can later scale and transform the HF until it fits.

· Another nice effect, that can easily be done with HFs are »reliefs«. To get a glimpse of how this can look like, take a look at the picture below.

· As you can see, there is (almost) nothing, you can't do with a heightfield. On the next page, we will do some exercises, concerning the topic »Heightfields in CSG-groups«.

· During these exercises, we will visit our temple from chapter A again, and create some gimmicks like a broken column and some engraved inscriptions.
