Editing the box-components of the column

· In this step we will insert the two cubes for the bottom and the top of the column. First we select the »Box«- item from the »Objects«-menu.

· Again you're asked for the name of the new object. Let's call this thing »Col01_BoxBottom«, since the cube belongs to the first column, and will be positioned at the bottom of the shaft. After confirming the new name vie the OK-button, the box is pasted into the scene.

· Like the cylinder, the cube has uniform values of 2 grid-units for the width, the height and the depth. To change these parameters, we re-enter the dialogbox for the manual setup (click on »modify«, »manual« and the cube to open this dialog).

· The first changes concern the global size. At the moment the width and the depth of the cube are equal to the width and depth of the shaft. To make the box a bit wider and deeper, we have to change the »Scale X«- and the »Scale Z«-entries from [1.0] to [1.4] each.

· Unlike the width and the depth, we have to reduce the height of the cube. For the »Scale Y«-parameter, [0.15] has turned out to be a good value. Now the pedestal of our column fits in size, but it's position within the scene is still incorrect. To change this, we alter another parameter, called »Translate Y«.
· Since the box should be at the bottom of the shaft, the desired translation- value must be less then zero. Furthermore, we want the box adjusted to the grid-lines. [-2.85] is the appropriate value for »Translate Y«, because adding the »Scale Y«- and the »Translate Y«-values yields a straight [3.0], which is of course the position of a grid-line.

The copy-command

· Still we need a second, equal shaped box at the top of the cylinder. We sure could create a new cube, and resize it manually, but there's a better way! Also located in the »modify«-sub menu is a button labled »copy«. To copy an existing object, you have to press this button, and then click on the source object. POVLAB immediately creates a copy of the source object, which you can drag with the mouse. For a better screen control, the bounding box of the copied object is displayed while you move the shape.

· When the copy is dropped onto the scene (releasing the mouse-button), POVLAB asks for a name for the new object. According to our naming convention we will call the new shape »Col01_BoxTop«. All that is left, is a little bit of fine tuning and so we re-enter the DB for the manual setup again. The only parameters to correct are the »Translate X/Y/Z«-values. [X] and [Z] should be set to [0.0], wheras [Y] has to be set to [2.85].
