Engravings done with heightfields
· POVLAB does support 3D-text-objects, but they are impemented as RAW-triangle-data. Unfortunately POV-Ray cannot perform CSG-operations on RAW- triangles due to the mathematical defnition of these objects. Nevertheless we can make engravings with our »good-for-everything«-object - the heightfield. ![]() |
· Making the image-map for a HF-text-string is far more easier than creating an image for a landscape. All you need is a paint-program, which allows text-input into bitmaps and which is capable of saving such images in GIF87- or TGA-format. All you have to do is to create a new image (choose a size that's suitable) an fill the entire image with the color »black«. Afterwards choose »white« as drawing color and enter the text you want. To get an engraving, you just have to create a HF out of this image and combine it with another object using the appropriate CSG-operation.
· NOTE: some paint-programs offer the feature of »antialiasing«, which will result in smother transitions from the background-color to the text-drawing-color. In our case, gray pixels would be inserted into the image. Do not forget, that such color-transitions affect the output-altitude of the heightfield. · You have seen, that there can be made much more with this object than only landscapes. You could as well create new shapes, not implemented as objects so far - to put in a nutshell: there are (almost) not limits. |
